چکیده

The eeect of axial and azimuthal forcing on the spreading and mixing characteristics in the near eld (x=D < 13) of a cooowing, turbulent (Re > 2000) water jet is studied by means of planar, laser induced uorescence (PLIF) visualizations. Measurements of both the initial spreading rate of the jet and the decay of the concentration along the centerline of the jet show a marked increase in the mixing of the jet as a result of the axial forcing. The mixing enhancement, which is shown to depend on the wavenumber of the azimuthal forcing, the frequency of the axial forcing, and the Reynolds number of the jet, results from the formation of vortex loops caused by the global induction of the jet's vorticity. This vortex induction mechanism appears to be similar to the vorticity modes earlier found in laminar cooowing jets (Lasheras et al., Lect.

Vorticity generation mechanisms and correct boundary conditions for transverse jet simulation

A three-dimensional vortex element method is developed to simulate the flow field of an incompressible transverse jet at high Reynolds number — in particular, to explore the response of large-scale vortical structures in the jet to actuation. Vorticity produced in the channel wall boundary layer interacts with the jet flow at the nozzle exit, producing both axial and azimuthal perturbations to ...

Vorticity Dynamics in Three-dimensional Pulsating Co-flowing Jet Diffusion Flames

The vorticity dynamics in the near field of laminar (Re = 10) co-flowing jets subjected to the single or combined effeets of axial and azimuthal forcing is analyzed. It is shown that the interaction of the three-dimensional vortex structure resulting from the growth of the two and three-dimensional instabilities may result in large changes in the entrainment and mixing characteristics of the je...

Axial motion and scalar transport in stretched spiral vortices

We consider the dynamics of axial velocity and of scalar transport in the stretched-spiral vortex model of turbulent fine scales. A large-time asymptotic solution to the scalar advection-diffusion equation, with an azimuthal swirling velocity field provided by the stretched spiral vortex, is used together with appropriate stretching transformations to determine the evolution of both the axial v...

Turbulent characteristics in flow subjected to bed suction and jet injection as a pier-scour countermeasure

The effect of a combined system of the bed suction and jet injection as a pier-scour countermeasure on the turbulent flow field is studied in a laboratory flume using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). The three components of the velocities in the vertical symmetry plane in the equilibrium scour hole in front and rear of the pier under 3-jet injections and bed suction rate Qs/Q0 = 2%located...

Experimental study and numerical simulation of three dimensional two phase impinging jet flow using anisotropic turbulence model

Hydrodynamic of a turbulent impinging jet on a flat plate has been studied experimentally and numerically. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 72000 to 102000 and a fixed jet-to-plate dimensionless distance of H/d=3.5. Based on the experimental setup, a multi-phase numerical model was simulated to predict flow properties of impinging jets using two turbulent models. Mesh...
